Steak Tips with Peppered Mushroom Gravy

A hearty winter meal – I served it with veggie packed macaroni and cheese.


1 1/2 pound top sirloin steak, cut into 3/4-inch pieces
1 tbsp lower-sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp sugar
Salt and Pepper
4 tsp canola oil
1 pound white mushrooms, trimmed and sliced thin
1 chopped onion
1 garlic glove, minced
1/2 tsp dried thyme
4 tsp all purpose flour
1 3/4 cup beef broth


Brown the meat in 1 tsp of canola oil on high heat. Remove the meat from the pan. Lower the heat. Add the mushrooms and onion until they are browned (about 8-10 minutes). Add the thyme and garlic. Mix 1 tbsp of broth with the flour in a separate cup. Add the rest of the broth to the pan. Put the meat back in the pan. Add the mixed flour and broth from the cup. Cook until the sauce has thickened. Serve up with some fresh pasta or baked macaroni and cheese like we did!
